Medical care of maternity patients under the emergency maternity and infant care program in New York City

The patterns of medical care of over 23,000 pregnant women who received complete maternity care under the EMIC program in New York City are described. Since the full cost of care was met, economic barriers to optimum care were absent. Quantitative data are given on the extent of physician participation in the program, and the amounts and kinds of consultant service considered necessary. The significance of these findings in medical education and in medical and hospital practice is discussed.
