Pathogenesis of pancreatic calculi in cattle

Pancreatic stones were found in 35 cattle at the Cluj abattoir from 1964 to 1970. In 32 cases the stones were whitish, in two dark brown, and in one white stones mixed with intestinal contents were found. Histologically, there was a chronic catarrhal inflammation of the duct mucosa with lympho-histiocytic infiltration of the submososa and sometimes also pancreatic sclerosis. The chemical composition of the stones was determined in some cases. Bacteriological studies of affected pancreases revealed intestinal flora. All the affected cattle were more than 4 years old, and the incidence was estimated at 1:67. Ingress of particles from the intestinal tract is considered to be a cause.
