We examined in this clinical trial the role of early vitamin A supplementation in influencing the incidence and the severity of PVH-IVH in VLBW neonates. Early achievement and maintenance of high plasma vitamin A concentrations in this trial were associated with a significantly decreased incidence of severe PVH-IVH. However, the overall frequency of PVH-IVH was not affected significantly. These findings suggest that vitamin A protects by rapidly limiting the extend of PVH-IVH and that early supplementation is important.
