Nutritional status and body composition of 26 Italian female gymnasts, 12.3 +or- 1.7 years old, were studied. Total energy and diet composition were estimated by a weekly food diary. Body composition was analysed using the tetrapolar impedence plethysmograph BIA-103. Body fat percent was 15.0 +or- 3.5 and body mass index 17.7 +or- 1.5. Energy intake (1552 kcal/day) was lower than recommended for the age group by the National Institute of Nutrition, but within the normal range if compared to total body weight (42.8 +or- 17.6 kcal/kg). Carbohydrate intake was 47.7% of total daily energy and was less than the recommended intake of 55-60%. Iron and magnesium intake were about 50% of the recommended intake. There was also low intakes of vitamins B and C. It is advised that dietary information be given to young gymnasts to avoid nutritional and metabolic consequences on growth rate and sport performance.
