The discovery of oil has led to profound changes in traditional society in Kuwait. Small-scale agriculture has been most affected. The rise of new industries has led to the abandonment of livestock production altogether and now most food is imported. New job opportunities attracted unskilled labour from nomadic tribes and large numbers of Bedouins moved from remote grazing areas into the city. Land values soard. The system of property rights became a rigid form of ownership. Political affiliations also changed; with the power of the tribal chiefs decreasing, kinship and family groups were weakened.
