Vasectomy in small passerine birds

The method use to vasectomise 15 Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) and 12 Bengalese finches (Lonchura striata) is described. The average operation time for bilateral vasectomy was 21.0 +or- 3.2 minutes for the zebra finch and 19 minutes for the Bengalese finch. The success rate was 12/12 for Bengalese finches and 14/15 for zebra finches although when female zebra finches were paired with 2 of the other vasectomized zebra finches they produced some fertile eggs before producing infertile eggs.
