The effectiveness of bed nets in protecting their users from malaria was investigated in a tea-growing area in Tengakhat Primary Health Centre of Dibrugarh district, Assam, India. Of the 7743 people in the area, 2501 (32.3%) used bed nets; only 1.8% of bed net users suffered from malaria during the transmission season compared to 5.9% of non-bed net users. Anopheles dirus has previously been incriminated as a vector of malaria in the area; it is suggested that as this is a highly anthropophilic and indoor-feeding (but not indoor-resting) species, bed nets may be a particularly effective means of personal protection from malaria in Dibrugarh district.
