Part of a special issue on agricultural biotechnology. This issue contains the proceedings of the conference "Agricultural Biotechnology: The Road to Improved Nutrition and Increased Production?", held November 1-2, 2001, in Boston, Massachusetts. The conference goals were to identify and examine the issues surrounding biotechnology as an approach to enhancing the nutritional quality of the food supply and assuring global food security; to provide the most up-to-date information about the effects of biotech agriculture on food safety and environmental issues; to educate and inform the nutritional science and policy community about biotechnology to foster discussion and identify areas for further research; and to foster understanding of the variety of nonscientific issues that have an impact on global acceptance of the technology, including economic, trade, and political issues.
