Cryoretinopexy in the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathies with hemophthalmos

In 1984-1987 the author used transconjunctival or transscleral cryoretinopexy in the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy with haemophthalmus in 69 eyes of 61 patients. During one session by means of a cryode with a temperature of -60 degrees C into each quadrant three points in two rows were applied, using an exposure time of 10-15 seconds. At the end of the mean observation period of 15.2 months the resulting visual acuity improved in 27 eyes (39.1%; it remained unaltered in 18 eyes (26.1%) and deteriorated in 24 eyes (34.8%). Partial absorption of the haemophthalmus was recorded in 57 eyes (82.6%), the finding was unaltered in 10 eyes (14.5%) and deteriorated in two eyes (2.9%). Comparison of results of cryoretinopexy in groups of patients with and without previous laser therapy did not reveal significant differences. The authors discuss also possible preoperative and postoperative complications.
