The need for prosthodontic instruction in Japan is increasing as the mean age of its population rises. The Japanese government formulated a policy in 1967 to ensure a sufficient number of dentists to deal with the challenge; with this new course of action has come an increased standard of dental care. Even though prosthodontic education occupies 20% of the 4-year predoctoral program in Japan, the author feels that predoctoral prosthodontic education must be improved to meet the needs of its people.
