Persons 14 to 57 years old and at least 15% overweight and wishing to lose weight were 33 given for each 2-week period of study 15 tablets of the anorectic diethylpropion hydrochloride and 33 given a placebo. The 4 men were all in the placebo group. Servings of food were presented as units of 25 kcal. Each person had a book of coupons marked in units, to be torn off when the corresponding number of units of food were eaten. Men got coupons worth 1500 and women 1200 kcal daily. All persons were weighed and their pulse and blood pressure were noted after 2, 4 and 6 weeks. In the groups given anorectic or placebo 5 and 5 dropped out and 11 and 5 reported at least one side effect. Except in 1 and 1 who left because of them, the side effects were mild and not related to weight gain or loss. There was no relation between bodyweight change and blood pressure. After 6 weeks those who had lost bodyweight, including those who had dropped out, had lost on average 6.4 lb in either group but 22 given anorectic and 14 given placebo had lost bodyweight and 6 and 14 had gained it.
