A new antihypertensive: ketanserin

Ketanserin, a serotonin antagonist, is a new antihypertensive agent. The drug is an arteriolar vasodilator, a S2 and alpha 1 receptor antagonist: this action favors a blood pressure reduction due to a decrease of peripheral resistances. Ketanserin appeared to have the same hypotensive effects of other anti-hypertensive drugs with which it was compared, such as beta-blocking agents, diuretics, and calcium antagonists. The combination with these drugs has been shown to be more effective than either drug alone. In addition, ketanserin does not cause pseudo-tolerance, appears to be more effective in elder than in young patients, is well tolerated, and does not induce clinically significant changes in the plasma lipid pattern.
