Muslims' low practice of family planning

The high fertility rates of women in India are discussed with respect to women's low levels of education. The nature of India's multi-religion society is presented as a unique case with interactions at every level. Although there is a growing acceptance of family planning, the rate of acceptance is lowest amongst Muslim women. Three possible factors are presented for this: that there is an inadequate knowledge of Islam; because of cultural and socioeconomic underdevelopment; and the multi-religious nature of Indian society (which, for example, may restrict Muslim women from asking non-Muslim doctors for family planning advice). Recommendations are suggested to increase the uptake of family planning methods, and indicators of a successful implementation strategy are listed.
