A brief account is given of the history of Soviet genetics with particular reference to the Lysenko period. Three stages are distinguished in the persecution of geneticists and an attempt is made to account for the events of these stages in the light of various factors involved, including the actions of Lysenko and Stalin. Short biographies are appended of Soviet geneticists who perished as a result of persecution.
