The results of 3 studies involving the copper and zinc status, body composition, nutrient intake and blood biochemical indices of nutritional status of members of a university swimming team are discussed. There were no significant decreases in blood indices of Cu and Zn nutritional status among men and women during training when dietary intake of these elements were adequate (>=67% recommended safe and adequate intake). At these intakes, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity increased after training indicating a biochemical adaptation of Cu metabolism associated with training. This increase occurred without an apparent increase in daily Cu intake. Calculated Cu intakes were 1.3 to 1.4 and 1.6 to 1.9 mg daily for women and men, respectively.
