Axial flaps provide a reliable method in the surgical treatment of chronic pressure scores in paraplegic patients. A retrospective analysis of 34 patients shows that the goal of sufficient external soft tissue coverage has been realized, but that some problems have to be solved with respect to the development of postoperative complications. Recommendations are made aiming at an improvement of the surgical procedure as part of a multidisciplinary approach.
