In Chandigarh 4331 persons were questioned and from replies 160 were thought likely to have peptic ulcer. Of 145 of those it was possible to X-ray 30 had duodenal ulcer; 1 of them had gastric ulcer also. Up to 20 years old and overall the incidence of ulcer was higher in males than females but not significantly so. For the 3144 whose income was lower, incidence was higher in those with under than in those with over Rs 150 a month, not significantly. Incidence in occupational groups was least in students, 0.11%, and significantly higher in skilled with unskilled manual workers, 1.78%, than in other groups. A specific group of 358 peons, sweepers and ward servants had an incidence of 4.2%. Those were the lowest and had the largest families and were probably under strain. Of 2013 men over 15 years old without ulcer 566 smoked and of 27 with ulcer 11 smoked; the difference was significant. Of 2024 without ulcer 425 drank alcohol and of 22 with ulcer 6 drank; the difference was not significant. Wheat was the staple food.
