Low NaCl tolerance, high temp. sensitivity, metabolic pattern of 6 C sources and pathogenic specialization on the genus Populus distinguish this organism from all other X. spp. described in Bergey's Manual. The new comb. Xanthomonas populi is proposed to designate this bacterium and a reference str. is suggested.
