In 1982 the Ghana Education Service introduced a programme to accelerate the training of 'pupil teachers' (barely qualified and untrained teachers), mostly holders of a middle school leaving certificate, in a cost-effective manner. The Ghanaian modular teacher training programme (MTTP) is a compromise between a distance and a conventional approach. An assessment of the programme is provided.
