Notes are given on the epidemiology, prevention, microbial etiology, diagnosis and treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease. Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis are the most common causes of pelvic inflammatory disease, accounting for 5-80 and 5-50% of cases, respectively. Pharmacological treatments, diagnostic procedures and surgery are outlined. Lifestyle factors and prevention, and counselling are also discussed briefly.
