Fatal acute myocardial infarction associated with postsplenectomy thrombocytosis

Postsplenectomy thrombocytosis (> 1,000 .times. 109/l) persisted in a 42 year-old female with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Two months after splenectomy, acute myocardial infarction developed and, after one week, the patient died in cardiogenic shock. At necrospy, thrombosis of the right coronary artery and the left anterior descending artery were found together with an extensive infarction of the left ventricular wall. In addition, thrombosis of right renal artery with acute infarction of the corresponding area was found. No atherosclerosis of the patient's arteries nor other signs of factors predisposing to thromboembolic disease were revealed, and it was concluded that the acute myocardial infarction was the result of thrombocytosis.
