How do adults evaluate their dental and oral hygiene status?

692 adults aged 19 to 55 years had been tested by the DMF index, the periodontal disease index to Ramfjord and the plaque index to Quigley and Hein. In addition they had been consulted for their satisfaction/dissatisfaction as to the oral health. The dissatisfaction with the oral status improved with increasing ages, but not in this manner as the destruction of the set of teeth. About 40 to 50% of the patients suffering from periodontal diseases expressed satisfaction about their periodantal state-inspite of gingival bleeding or/and atrophic alterations of the alveolar bone. The efficacy of own oral hygiene is overestimated. About two thirds of all the subjects decided that a thorough cleaning of teeth will improve their oral hygiene.
