A study of aggressive and violent behaviour among a group of psychiatric in-patients in Kenya

A group of African psychiatric in-patients in four acute admission wards in the National Referral Mental Hosptial, situated in the outskirts of Nairobi City was studied. The patient population included those who were referred from the rural areas where psychiatric in-patient care was not available, as well as those who dwelled in the city. It was found that aggressive and violent behaviour was exhibited by about 19% of the patients, who repeatedly behaved in such a manner. They accounted for about 47% of the reported incidents of violence within a period of three years.
