Giant condyloma of the penis. Presentation of 3 cases and review of the literature

Three cases of giant condyloma of the penis are described. The most relevant aspects involving its diagnosis by pathologic anatomy, prognosis and possible treatment modalities are discussed and the most significant studies on this condition in the literature are reviewed. Current concepts on the prognosis of this disease have replaced the classical view that ascribed a benign nature to this neoformation since microfoci of squamous cell carcinoma have been observed in the stroma of these tumors. Thus, there is a trend currently to replace the term "Buschke-Lowenstein tumor" for the more precise "verrucous carcinoma of penis" a term that describes better its pathologic features and possible evolution. In our view, the treatment of choice is by surgery: excision using the surgical knife, electrosurgical resection of the tumor, or partial amputation of the penis. However, other therapeutic possibilities seem to be available today using modern oncolytic therapy and laser although it is still too early to draw conclusions about their efficacy since the series is still small and follow up very short.
