The experience in treating 310 patients with peritonitis shows that microflora of these patients mostly contains colibacilli and staphylococci. Broad-spectrum anitibotics were used in the first days of the postoperative period until the results of culturing were obtained. Combined use of two antibiotics produces synergistic effect and interferes with development of resistance in microflora. It is expedient to use less toxic antibiotics with minimum side effects. Since microflora changes sensitivity to antibiotics during treatment culturing should be repeated. The mode of administration and the dose of antibiotic should be determined by the degree of spread of the purulent process and the patient's condition. It is necessary to use maximal doses of antibiotics for managing diffuse peritonitis. Antibiotics should be administered by the intra-arterial and endolymphatic route.
