Positive water and sodium balances during 10 days in 7 patients who received a standard total parenteral nutrition (TPN) diet were associated with a slight increase in body weight and a decrease in serum albumin concentrations. Although TPN seems to affect the nutritional response other factors are probably involved. Of 7 patients who received a modified TPN formula (water 30 ml/kg daily, no sodium and 70% non-protein energy as fat) all lost weight.
