Ventricular fibrillation after sniffing lighter fuel

A case of ventricular fibrillation in a previously healthy girl aged 14 years is presented. Electrophysiological demonstration of an atrio-ventricular junctional re-entry tachycardia support the suspicion, that a pre-existing non-symptom-producing cardiac disease increases the risk of arrhythmias after sniffing lighter fuel. The direct sensitizing effect on the heart of butane gases is discussed. Increased information and warning about sniffing of lighter fuel are recommended.
