The area of the articular surface of the distal end of the human femur

A simple method of measuring the articular surface area of the distal end of the femur using sheets of dental wax is described. The method uses no expensive equipment and can be applied to any dry bone of reasonable size. The results are reproducible to within acceptable limits. The mean value for the articular area of the distal end of the adult human femur was estimated to be 43.8 8.6 cm2.
