Alternative treatment among patients with inflammatory bowel disease

In a material of 196 patients with inflammatory intestinal conditions, the frequency of employment of alternative treatment and the patterns of this were investigated. A sex and age matched group of appendectomized patients served as a control group. At one time or another, 46% of the patients with inflammatory intestinal conditions had been treated by alternative methods while only 30% of the appendectomized patients had employed this form of treatment. Among the patients with inflammatory intestinal conditions, 57% of those who employed alternative therapy stated that their chronic intestinal condition was the reason for this. The frequency of employment of alternative therapy was independent of sex, age, education and satisfaction with traditional medical therapy in both of the groups.
