Metallosis after osteosynthesis

This study included 50 cases of fractures and pseudarthrosis treated by osteosynthesis (V4α-steel), the metallic material being removed after an average of 12 months for fractures and 20 for pseudarthrosis. Semiquantitative evaluation of metallosis and inflammatory reaction (from + to +++) showed corresponding increase, both parameters becoming more pronounced the longer the osteosynthetic material had been in place: some degree of metallosis was found in every case, at least focally. Besides 42 well healed fractures in satisfactory position the following complications were found: pseudarthrosis after osteosynthesis 4, osteomyelitis 3, and fracture of the plate 1. No generalized effects (metal intoxications) were found. However the metallic material never had been in the tissue for more than 3 years.
