It is often difficult to convey health messages to people in areas where minority languages are spoken. Yet clear communication is necessary to persuade people to accept a wide range of services and to defend their own health needs. Cassette tapes in local languages can prove invaluable in this connection, especially in remote villages. The article reports on a health education project, initiated by the Thai- German Highland Development Programme (TG-HDP) and the Royal Thai Government's Malaria Regional Centre for Northern Thailand, involving the production of malaria education cassette tapes in different languages for use in villages. The resulting success of this project, which encouraged many people to increase their involvement in the prevention and treatment of the disease, led to the further production of tapes in different tribal languages on family planning, maternal and child health, nutrition, and disease prevention. The importance of educational tools of this kind and of quality control, distribution and follow-up in this type of project are highlighted.
