The surgical treatment of transfixing liver injuries accompanied by profuse hemorrhage has technical difficulties. Frequently the patient dies of intra-operative bleeding. The conventional tamponing techniques and resections are frequently followed by complications. The authors developed a tamponing device of easy use and report on their experience with it in nine cases. The device functioned efficiently in all instances with the following results: six biliary fistulae closed spontaneously; in one case complications occurred that required re-operation.
