Is skin cancer a marker of internal cancer?

Skin cancer has been suggested to be a marker for internal malignant disease. This study refers to three Danish investigation of the relationship between Bowen's disease, basal cell epithelioma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The study cohorts were linked to the Danish Cancer Registry and the observed and the estimated number of cases with internal cancers were calculated and compared. No significant relationship between the occurrence of skin cancer and possible development of internal cancer was observed in any of the studies.
