The long term effects of lithium on cognitive functions of patients of primary affective disorder receiving prophylactic lithium therapy were studied. Performance on Bhatia Battery of Performance Tests, PGI Memory Scale and Bender Gestalt Test of 30 patients initially when receiving lithium, and one week after placebo treatment, was compared with performance of 30 matched controls on the same tests assessed twice at an interval of one week. Subjective evaluation of cognitive functions in patients was done by the Self Rating Scale of Cognitive Functions. Although no evidence of cognitive functions as impaired on the Self Rating Scale. The self ratings of patients were significantly related to test time and level of education.
