In August 1987 a questionnaire survey of 915 students at the University of Ilorin and its teaching hospital revealed a high awareness of the causative agent and severity of AIDS but inconsistent views on the cure and prevention of AIDS and poor knowledge of the non-transmission by casual contact. Only 78% knew the preventive value of the condom against HIV transmission. 75.3% thought that the media offer more AIDS information and education than the university curriculum and >90% were willing to learn about AIDS, STDs and population issues (including family planning) as part of the compulsory general studies programme. The authors recommend incorporation of these topics into the curriculum of universities and secondary schools and the dissemination of AIDS education through the networks of primary health care, the Expanded Programme on Immunization and family planning programmes.Hilary Richardson.
