1000 consultations were recorded in the practice of a female general practitioner. 92.5% of the consultations concerned a female patient. Gynecological examination was performed in 32.9%, and antenatal clinics comprised 36.6% of the consultations. The satisfaction of competence in gynecology and obstetrics, and gratitude from female patients compensates only to a small extent for professional monotony. There is a genuine risk of losing competence in other areas of general practice. A considerable part of the gynecology of primary health care is carried out by female general practitioners, who are obviously preferred by many female patients. However, the number of female general practitioners is far too low. Without an increasing number of female general practitioners the requirements of female patients seem incompatible with a more diversified practice for female doctors.
