Recovery from herpes simplex encephalitis of a child with acute lymphoid leukemia

The case of a nine year old girls acute lymphoid leukemia is presented, who had herpes simplex encephalitis during cytostatic drug therapy. The immediate introduction of Acyclovir resulted total recovery without any signs of brain damage. The authors discuss the differential diagnosis of the central nervous system complications of acute lymphoid leukemia, and the establishment of the diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis. They draw the attention to the fact, that the early diagnosis and the immediate therapy of herpes simplex encephalitis can result in total recovery even in the case of such a serious underlying disease.
