The total population of a range of medical care (about 2,800 inhabitants) had been observed over a period of 24 years. Those three characteristics of the general efficiency-the lack of which induces the patient to see the physician-had been studied by the middle of this period: well-being, physical perseverance, no shortness of breath. The subjects aged at the date of study 40 to 69 years had acc. to their state of health been subdivided into independent groups (from constant health over several stages of diseases up to a second indisposition). The general efficiency already essentially decreases before the manifestation of a disease, being by its course an indicator reflecting the degree of health.
