Effect of sympathetic nerve block on changes in vascular and tissue granulocyte pools

The granulocyte system was studied in 60 patients without systemic diseases operated on under extradural analgesia. The phagocytic activity of the granulocytes was determined using for this purpose the NBT test. The obtained results were compared with similar determinations in the control group. In the studied group a significant rise was found of the proportion of NBT-positive granulocytes, in relation to the control group. On the basis of the obtained results an activating effect of extradural analgesia on the energy metabolism in the granulocytes was demonstrated, which was regarded as a positive effect indicating a state readiness and mobilization of the immune system in respose to sympathetic blockade.
