The two-dimensional echocardiogram is an ideal noninvasive method for the visualization quantification of wall motion abnormalites in the early phase of acute myocardial infarction. The instruments are portable, and studies are readily available at a patient's bedside. The degree of wall motion abnormality may be assessed by an overall wall motion score index and ejection fraction, which reflect the extent of left ventricular involvement may be determined. The prognostic value of the wall motion score index and ejection fraction in the prediction of which patients will have in-hospital mortality is excellent. These two parameters are especially useful in the identification of a high risk subgroup of patients who initially appear to be in stable condition on the basis of clinical variables.
