All calves fed the locoweed (green and dry) Oxytropis sericea and dry Astragalus lentiginosus at high elevation developed clinical signs and gross and microscopic lesions of congestive right heart failure. Clinical signs and microscopic lesions of locoweed poisoning were also evident. Control calves at high elevation remained normal. Calves given locoweed at low elevation showed clinical signs of locoweed poisoning but not of congestive heart failure.
