The rumen pillars of domestic ruminants

Morphological findings from examination of rumens of freshly slaughtered cattle, sheep and goats differed from those found in the veterinary anatomical literature. At the outer side of the ruminal wall there is no arrangement of surrounding grooves and at the inner side there is no complete circle of pillars dividing dorsal and ventral ruminal sacs. With regard to developmental anatomy of the rumen the deeper grooves and the thicker pillars correspond in their formation with the flexures of the ruminal walls and which followed the course of the ruminal blood vessels. It is concluded that it is not correct to classify between longitudinal and accessory ruminal grooves or pillars and therefore an appropriate nomenclature is suggested.
