An Italian multicenter study on the efficacy and tolerability of aztreonam in the treatment of urinary tract infections

One thousand and twenty-one patients evaluable for efficacy and 1427 evaluable for safety were included in a multicentre study on efficacy and safety of aztreonam, a new monobactam antibiotic with a selective action toward Gram-negative aerobic microrganisms, in the treatment of urinary tract infections. The patients, mainly hospitalized (79.9%), 68% males and 32% females, had a mean age of 58 .+-. 17 years and showed a urinary tract infection, defined as bacteriuria > 105 col/ml at pretreatment microbiological control. At the follow-up, during and after treatment, the eradication of the causative germ was obtained in 80.4%, 88.7%, 91.4% and 91.0% of the patients. The results were the same for different localizations of the infection and for different microrganisms. Superinfections were observed, at post-treatment control, in the 7.7% of the patients. Sixty-four side effects, mainly light, were described in 54 patients (3.8%) and caused the withdrawal of the therapy only in 3 cases. The results obtained show aztreonam as greatly efficacious in treatment of urinary tract infections, whichever the localization and the causative germ, and with optimal safety, general as well as local.
