HTLV-I seropositivity in east Caprivi, SWA/Namibia

Serological examination of 708 black people in east Caprivi, SWA/Namibia, showed 4.2% and 5.6% respectively to be positive for HIV-1 by ELAVIA (Pasteur) and ELISA (Du Pont); 2.6% were confirmed seropositive by Western blot. Fifteen (2.1%) of 704 samples were seropositive for HIV-2 infection by ELAVIA, but none by Western blot. The peak prevalence of seropositivity for HIV-1 was in the 10-19 years age-group.Carolyn A.
