The technical development of membrane bio-reactors (MBR) has advanced significantly over recent years. As the capital and operating costs of membrane technology are on a downward trend, the possibility of replacing conventional activated sludge with MBR systems is now being realised globally in applications where high effluent quality is demanded and a small environmental impact required. Three case studies are presented: municipal effluent treatment for discharge in Germany; municipal effluent treatment for reuse as irrigation water in the USA using a filter plant; and effluent reuse in the UK food industry.
