The study was carried out on 37 children aged 10 .+-. 5 months at the time of admission to hospital for treatment of chronic diarrhoea, and 57 children with reliably established (24 cases) and highly probable (33 cases) coeliac disease. The latter group comprised children aged 14.4 .+-. 6 months. No significant differences were found in body weight defict in the compared groups, but children with coeliac disease had lower serum levels of albumin, iron and calcium. The children with chronic diarrhoea stayed longer in hospital and had a slower response to the administered treatment. They had, more frequently, signs of skin allergy. The authors suggest differentiation in clinical practice of the state of chronic diarrhoea without permanent damage to the mucosa of the small intestine from certain or highly probably coeliac disease.
