Division of Epidemiology, Ministry of Public Health summarized the AIDS cases from 1984 to 31st May, 1998. Total number of patients and deaths were 87 886 and 23 713 respectively. Male to female rates was 4:3:1. The most affect age group was 25-39 years old. Labours were the most affected group. Sexual transmission was ranked as highest risk factor and then IVDU, mother-to-child transmission and transfused blood transmission were in the subsequent ranking orders. Homosexual transmission was responsible to 0.8%. Top five ranking locations were Phayao, Lampang, Chantaburi, Naan and Phuket. From top five ranking opportunistic infections were tuberculosis (pulmonary and extrapulmonary - 22 387 cases), Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (15 525 cases), cryptococcosis (14 762 cases), candidiasis (esophageal, tracheal or pulmonary - 5103 cases) and recurrent bacterial pneumonia (more than one episode in one year - 3347 cases).
