It was shown that colonic brush smears yielded an adequate material for cytometric analysis of DNA ploidy. According to DNA distribution patterns the tumors were divided into two groups classified as diploid and aneuploid. DNA distributions observed in diploid tumor were similar to those observed in normal colonic mucosa. Characteristic of aneuploid tumors were the histograms with major peaks representing cells with abnormal DNA content. Since it was previously shown that diploid colonic tumors have better prognoses than aneuploid tumors the data recorded in this study suggest that cytometry of colonic brush smears may prove to have practical value in identifying high-risk patients.
