Healthy groups of 160 boys and 120 girls 12 to 17 years old, resident in Ibadan, Nigeria, had serum albumin 44.9 +or- (s.d.) 4.6 and 45.5 +or- 4.1, serum globulin 34.3 +or- 4.0 and 33.6 +or- 3.9 and total proteins 79.2 +or- 6.0 and 79.1 +or- 6.3 g/litre, and haematocrit 40.0 +or- 3.10 and 40.0 +or- 3.4%, respectively. The values for serum albumin were significantly higher than those reported 20 years previously. The results are discussed in the light of the improvement in living standards and better dietary habits, and indicate the necessity for re-evaluating serum albumin values in populations where the living standard has improved over the years. Serum albumin and total proteins of [280] healthy Nigerian adolescents aged 12-17 years were estimated. The average serum albumin value was significantly higher than previously reported twenty years ago. This increase has shown that the serum albumin concentration of Africans can be as high as that of Europeans. The results are discussed in the light of the improved standard of living and better dietary habits and indicate the necessity for re-evaluating serum albumin values in populations where the standard of living has improved over the years, since this parameter is of great diagnostic value in medical practice.AS Serum albumin and total proteins of [280] healthy Nigerian adolescents aged 12-17 years were estimated.
