Disseminated sarcocystosis in a cat with lymphosarcoma

Numerous Sarcocystis sp. cysts were found in the muscles of the heart, limbs, diaphragm, eyes and intercostal spaces of a cat euthanized for generalized lymphosarcoma. No inflammatory response associated with the cysts was observed. Electron microscopy revealed that the primary cyst wall differed from that previously described in cats (the parasitophorous membrane had regularly spaced 1 micro m long villi) suggesting that more than one species may encyst in cats.
